/e·mò·ti·con/ illustrate emotion
is an open call addressed to young illustrators, conceived with the intent of exploring through their art the beauty of human beings in the expression of their emotions. The committee will select a variable number of finalist illustrations (minimum 10) which will be presented in the /e.mò.ti.con/ exhibition and, among them, 5 winning illustrations which will be protagonists of the communication campaigns of the theatre festivals by La Piccionaia dedicated to youth, childhood and families: the theatre festival for younger generations “Terrestri d’Estate” in Vicenza and the winter theatre programs dedicated “Famiglie a Teatro 2019/20” at Teatro Astra in Vicenza, Teatro Villa dei Leoni in Mira (Venice), Teatro Comunale in Mirano (Venice) and Teatro Ferrari in Camposampiero (Padua).
La Piccionaia is a Centre for Theatre Production accredited by the Italian Ministry of Cultural heritage and activities and organized through the legal form of a non-profit Social Cooperative. It’s a network that assembles professionals committed towards a common envisage of cultural promotion with a special focus on young generations: an educational project to depict and explore our contemporary world, as well as process new meanings, which flourishes through theatre and performative languages with plays, workshops, performances, cultural activities and the efforts of relations and active engagement among the individuals of our community.
Illustri Association brings together professional illustrators, emerging young people and enthusiasts of the arts of illustration. It is a point of reference on national level, that brings together professionalism in all of its forms, creates oportunities for confrontations and realizes exhibitions to promote excellences and new trends. It also organizes conversations and talks, as well as the Forum and Illustri Festival, the biennial exhibition of illustration that takes place in Vicenza and represents one of the most important Italian showcases of illustration.
The contest is addressed to illustrators (professionals, non-professionals, students) no older than 35 years at the time of publication of this announcement, and of any citizenship. For people under 18, parental consent is needed.
/e·mò·ti·con/ illustrate emotion intends to explore the theme of the beauty of human beings in the expression of their emotions. In particular, artists are requested to convey, through their illustrations, one or more of the next themes:
a) the beauty of human beings in the emotions of a child’s gaze
b) the beauty of human beings as an act of resistance and a driver for change
c) the beauty of human beings in the relationship between different generations
In order to take part in the contest, each illustrator must submit 2 different illustrations. The illustrations must be original and preferably unpublished. In the case of previously published illustrations, the participant must specify in which context the publication took place. Images must be sent via e-mail in JPEG format, RGB, 300 dpi. The illustrations submitted will be used with the only purpose of evaluation by the Committee and will in no way be published or used for other purposes.
The contest will open on March 25th 2019 and close at 11 p.m. of May 5th 2019
In order to take part in the contest, illustrators must send the application form and the 2 required illustrations by e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org, starting from 12:00 a.m. of Monday, March 25th up to, and no later than, 11:00 p.m. of Sunday, May 5th 2019. Any application sent after the deadline won’t be taken into consideration.
Among the projects regularly submitted, a panel of experts will select a variable number of finalist projects (minimum 10), whose authors will be notified by e-mail by May 9th 2019. Among the finalist illustrations, the Committee will select 5 winner illustrations, whose authors will be notified by e-mail by June 14th 2018. Afterwards, the results will be published on La Piccionaia’s social media channels.
awards ceremony and exhibition
The finalist projects will be publicly presented through an exhibition that will take place in Vicenza from June 7th to July 28th 2019. The Awards ceremony for the authors of the 5 winning illustrations will take place on July 17th 2019, during the forum “Educare alla bellezza”. Afterwards, during 2019/2020 season, the exhibition will take place in the Padua and Venice districts in the other theatre managed by La Piccionaia.
The Committee will be composed by 2 illustrators, 1 theatre playwriter and director, 1 theatre organizer and 1 art director. It will select, at its sole discretion, the finalist illustrations and, among them, the 5 winning illustrations. The evaluation will be carried out in accordance with a criteria of quality, level of creativity and relevance to the theme of the contest. Furthermore, in case of previously published illustrations, the Commission will evaluate the compatibility of the publication context with respect to the use of the image for La Piccionaia’s communication campaigns.
The authors of the 5 winning illustrations will receive respectively an amount of € 250,00 as a prize. Moreover, the winning illustrations will be the protagonists of the communication and advertising materials, both on paper and online, of the theatre festivals by La Piccionaia dedicated to youth, childhood and families: the theatre festival for younger generations “Terrestri d’Estate” in Vicenza and the winter theatre programs dedicated “Famiglie a Teatro 2019/20” at Teatro Astra in Vicenza, Teatro Villa dei Leoni in Mira (Venice), Teatro Comunale in Mirano (Venice) and Teatro Ferrari in Camposampiero (Padua). The artists who will be selected as finalists but not as winners will still have the opportunity to be involved in the illustration of other projects of La Piccionaia (theatre scheduling, theatre for schools, productions of various natures, etc.). All the finalist illustrations will be hosted within the exhibition to be held first in Vicenza and then in the provinces of Padua and Venice. A catalog containing the reproductions of all the finalist illustrations will also be produced and published.
The authors of the 5 winning illustrations agree through the application itself to hand over the rights on their winning illustration to La Piccionaia until May 31st 2020. The finalist and winning works will be reproduced for the realization of the traveling exhibition that will be set up in Vicenza and in the provinces of Padua and Venice at the other theatres managed by La Piccionaia, as well as for the production and publication of the exhibit’s catalogue. The winning illustrations will be used for the production of the promotional and communication materials for “Famiglie a teatro 2019/20” and “Terrestri d’estate 2019” theatre festival schedulings. La Piccionaia commits to always mention the legitimate author.
The Committee’s decision is indisputable and final. By taking part in the contest, the authors accept the present regulation and personally assume any responsibility concerning the illustration sent, stating that they have created them legitimately, in observance of current legislation, and releasing La Piccionaia from any liability and consequence that may come from claims and/or charges from third parties.

In accordance with and for all intents and purposes of the provisions of Legislative Decree No. 196 of June 30th 2003 and in observance of the personal data protection standards, the latter, provided and/or acquired, by receiving the illustrations, that is afterwards, will be handled by the promoter using both electronic and manual instruments, in accordance with the current privacy legislation.
